Kay Mason Foundation

A rebrand for a non-profit organisation that supports talented, underserved youth through education and mentorship to shapes future leaders.

THE ASK

KMF needed a rebrand that honoured over 25 years of impact while positioning the organisation for its next phase of growth. The identity had to feel modern, credible and inspiring – appealing to global donors, partners and foundations, while remaining authentic to scholars, alumni and internal teams. Unmistakably South African in spirit, the brand needed to celebrate diversity, pride and possibility, and visually balance sophistication with warmth, energy and humanity – anchored by a strong creative device that expressed KMF’s ripple effect and lasting influence.

THE EXECUTION

We created a distinctive, ownable brand system that visually expresses KMF’s transformative impact while balancing international credibility with authentic South African character. The identity begins with a custom typeface for the KMF acronym, constructed from a single rectangular form. This approach allows the wordmark to stand confidently on its own, establishing clarity, strength and consistency at the core of the brand. From this foundation, we developed a bespoke logo mark by stepping and repeating each letter into a circular form. The resulting shape symbolises the ripple effect of KMF’s work in shaping future leaders.

To extend the system beyond the logo, we deconstructed both the wordmark and icon to create a flexible suite of patterns and graphic devices. These elements introduce movement, rhythm and texture, giving the brand a contemporary South African expression while remaining refined and globally relevant. This visual language enables consistent storytelling across all platforms.

The colour palette was developed using colour theory and informed by KMF’s values, then refined to feel modern, digital-first and timeless. The final identity system is clear, modular and intuitive—empowering internal teams and creative partners to maintain strong brand consistency while allowing flexibility and creative expression within the new guidelines.
